Chapter 4
Back in the present, Gene's Mansion late at night:
Terri finished her story, leaving Melissa and Shannon entranced. Shannon sunk her spoon into the Birthday cake and took a small bite.
"Man that was something, you rock girl!" Shannon told her.
"Wow, I'd say that was more then fair," Melissa nodded.
"What was more then fair?" asked a voice that made all their spines collectively tingle.
"Uh… ice cream?" Shannon asked, holding up a pint. Gene wandered into the kitchen, his bathrobe tied loosely yet securely around his tall massive form.
"You have got to try this Gene. You've been deprived till you've tried Bluebell!" Melissa said. She held up a spoonful of the Birthday cake for Gene, and he leaned forward to sample it with a look of delight. His eyes closed in bliss when he licked it off the spoon and took in the full flavor.
"Mm, that's certainty worth getting up in the middle of the night for… can I try that one?" he asked, turning to Shannon. She fed him a spoonful in turn, and he seemed in heaven, not to mention Shannon who was glad to have his attention that moment.
"I can't wait for tomorrow," Shannon said slowly as he helped her finish off the pint. Melissa and Terri were watching the two flirting with great interest.
"And why would that be, little girl?" Gene winked, moving closer as she put the last spoonful into his mouth.
"Your own private pool, four beautiful women, and lots of fun…" Shannon purred. "I don't know… you do the math…"
"I could give you lessons in multiplication and division…"
"I dunno about you gals, but I'm getting a little slow here, the icecream's having an effect," Melissa coughed.
"I can see my ice-cream melting from here," Terri teased them both, brushing up against Gene. "And there is plenty of time tomorrow for water sports, if you get my drift…"
"See you in your dreams, little girl," Gene whispered to Shannon, as he took Terri's hand and followed her upstairs. Leaving Shannon stunned at the lascivious twinkle in his eyes.
"Did he just say what I thought he did?' Shannon asked Melissa.
"Uh huh,' Melissa laughed.
"And Terri. She didn’t' even flinch! You think…"
"I'm just thinking about Eric Singer, and how yummy he looks with dark hair," Melissa purred, putting her empty tubs into the trashcan. She took the spoon out of Shannon's slack grip and tossed it into the dishwasher with the rest of the dirty dishes.
"But Terri… if I'm gonna seduce Gene, and you're gonna get Eric, what about her… is Bruce coming?"
"As far as I know yes…" Melissa smiled. "And I'm sure Terri will be too busy with him to notice you two trysting somewhere else…"
"But Paul…" Shannon asked.
"He's bringing a girl."
"Liz?"
"Well Liz and him had a big fight lately. She's broken up with him for now… and he started dating Veronica. But who knows with Paul's love life? I hear from Terri that Veronica's got a mind of her own, and if Paul pisses her off…" Melissa announced.
"Who can say?" Shannon shrugged.
"She mentioned that Liz got a great job offer doing fashion design, didn't she?" Shannon said.
"Well I hope it all works out," Melissa said.
"Well you and I are going to pick out the perfect outfits for tomorrow… and formulate some plans… we've got some hunting to do…" Shannon said, licking her lips of the chocolate mustache they had acquired.
"Don't you want to sleep?" Melissa asked her.
"Who can sleep when Gene practically… well you know did his thing at me?" Shannon laughed.
"Wait, does Terri know about the party, that Bruce is coming here tomorrow?" Melissa asked them.
"No," Shannon laughed.
"But I thought…"
"It happened when you were out of the room. Gene suggested we give Terri a huge surprise. We're going to have one hell of a party tomorrow, and we're gonna really surprise her…"
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"It's a one year anniversary party," said Shannon. "And Gene's gonna give her a very special surprise…"
"What?"
"One night of unbridled passion with Bruce," she winked. "Terri has no idea that he's gonna show up…"
"Oh man you guys are devious… but what about Gene?"
"Leave him to me. I'm gonna get him alone… so Terri can enjoy her 'present…'"
"What about me?" Melissa rested a hand on her hip.
"Eric Singer's gonna be here," Shannon winked. "And he's heard all about you from Terri and Gene… and he wants to meet the woman who wrote Forever Sterling. He loves that novel!"
"No way," Melissa almost swooned.
Chapter 5
Next day at breakfast, Terri seemed a bit remote and aloof. Gene leaned over toward her at the breakfast table and pressed a soft kiss before her ear, "Terri, something wrong?"
"Uh, not really…" she said. Gene's warning look told her he could see right through that.
"You know better then that. Are you upset with the possibility of me sleeping with Shannon or Melissa?"
"No, it's not that Gene," Terri said, grasping his hand. "What you want to do with them is your business. They're my friends, and for them to have a piece of the Demon, I couldn't be happier for. I don't mind 'sharing' you with them. But I'm just thinking about someone I met yesterday at the convention…"
"Who was that?' Gene asked, sipping a mouthful of coffee to wash down the bagel he chewed.
"Well his name was Dr. Leo Malcolm. He and I go back to Grad school. We had a relationship that went nowhere… because he was more into school and career then me. So I broke it off…"
"And you ran into him yesterday?' Gene asked levelly. "Did he say something to upset you?"
"Not at all. He seemed genuinely interested in what was going on in my life, and we went to dinner together…"
"Oh," Gene muttered. "Well, why are you so preoccupied then?"
"I dunno… old memories resurfacing," she sighed, swirling her juice glass absently.
"You still have feelings for him?" Gene asked slowly.
"Yes and no. I'm not still in love with him after five years Gene, if that's what you're worried about. I was pretty angry with him when I broke it off, because I felt he took me for granted. But we were both young, and full of our futures…"
"How old is he?' Gene asked.
"About three years older then me. He was halfway through his Ph.D. at Villanova under Dr. Groves. In fact, he was one of Dr. Grove's last students before that professor retired. And they discontinued the Ph.D. program in Chemistry at Villanova. I was only just starting my masters, and we TA'd together… we were in the same research group. When Groves retired, I switched to Foley's group…"
"Yeah… but how serious were you?"
"We… well he was my first SERIOUS guy, if that answers your question," Terri said slowly. "I fell head over heels in love with him, and I felt he loved me too…"
"Did he tell you?"
"Yes. When I said to him that one of the things I loved about him was his intensity and his kindness, he whispered 'I love you' and kissed me that night in front of his apartment… so yeah he said that he loved me… on a few occasions…"
"So what went wrong?"
"He got a hot shot offer for a post doctoral internship at NYU at the same time he got a job offer at Merck in Lansdale PA. He told me that he had to take it… and I agreed he should, even though I was hurt that he was going to leave me behind… I wanted to go with him, but he would hear nothing of it. I even offered to transfer to NYU, but he insisted that it wasn't a good time…"
"Oh really?" Gene asked. "Well was it because he wanted you to finish your school first?"
"He didn't seem into talking about it. I tried to bring up the subject of him and me, and well he would come up with some excuse… that he wasn't settled and I wasn't done with school… and then it was his diabetes, and then something else."
"Was that what made you break it off?"
"Not only that, but also the phone calls. I finally got sick of him calling me and bragging about how great he was doing at NYU, and how it was the perfect move. It drove me up the wall… and I felt as if he were rubbing it in my face. Plus the whining and moaning about little things that got on my nerves. Finally, I just couldn’t' take it anymore because I missed him, and yet he didn't want me with him anymore… I had to cut him loose…"
"Sounds like you made a good decision," Gene affirmed, and kissed Terri's hand. "And then you ran into him by accident yesterday?"
"Yes. I had gotten emails from him when I was still at Villanova, but I never answered them. I finally changed my email address, and stopped thinking about him and me. That was five years ago…"
"Do you think he still likes you?"
"Well I must say he's grown up a lot since then,' Terri said. "I actually had a normal conversation with him, and enjoyed spending time with him. Especially when he said 'let's put the past behind us…' and we actually could… without me wanting to strangle him…"
"Oh," Gene muttered. "Well I suppose that's good. But why do I get the sense that you're not thrilled about this?"
"Part of me sees how he was when we first went together. That first year we dated it was one of the best in my life. I loved that man."
"But do you still love him?" Gene asked her again. "After all this time?"
"I don't know," Terri confessed. "He makes me feel uneasy, and some of the old feelings come back yes. But I have no intention of resuming a relationship with him, if you are worried about that…"
"Well I'm more worried about you. Are you planning on spending any more time with him?"
"I was thinking of lunch, but now I don't know…"
"It's up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it," Gene shook his head. "Things can happen between ex's that are awkward."
"You and Shannon still are friends…"
"I have children with her, and I've been with her a lot longer then you were with this Leo. And not only that, but it took a lot of work to keep that friendship on good terms."
"You've been separated for five years. Don't you ever get old feelings back?"
"Yes I do. I still love her in some ways, but as the mother of my children, and as a good friend. We parted because of other reasons then you and Leo."
"Well I don't have children with him, and we never lived together… not like you and I are now. You're the first man I've lived with…"
"That doesn’t' surprise me…" he said. "But I'm just concerned about you and this Leo… not because I'm jealous… okay I'll admit I am, but I don't want you getting hurt… because it sounds like he hurt you before…"
"He's grown up. And if you and Shannon are ex's and can still be friends…"
"Why are you so bent on resuming this relationship, if he didn’t' make much of an effort till now to resume it?"
"He did admit to trying to find me, but I didn't want to be found…"
"What makes now different?"
"I can't say," Terri admitted, picking up her plate and taking it over to the dishwasher. She took Gene's as well, rinsing them off before stacking them in.
Gene sighed as he got up from the table, and headed upstairs. He didn't like this at all. While he didn't want to seem like a jealous fiend, he was burning with the green monster himself. It wasn't the same as Terri sleeping with Bruce, a good friend. Considering the fact that it was a casual fling like he was contemplating with Shannon, and they had mutually decided if either one wanted such action, it was perfectly fine. This was different, because if Terri was this moved by a man from her past… could he possibly lose her?
Perhaps she needed a distraction, and he hoped the pool party would provide just that. He and Shannon had done this often enough, separate and divide and conquer at a party to spice things up in their relationship. That was what seemed to be happening here. And if Bruce could take Terri's mind off this Leo, all the better.
It did sound really warped; Gene had to admit on reflection as he went upstairs to change. He jumped into the shower for a quick rinse off and soak to think about what was going to happen. Terri had a feeling they were planning a get together, but she didn't know what he had in store for her. It was going to be extra special, and she didn't know the little conversation he and Bruce had regarding the special preparations.
Chapter 6
"There they come," Shannon nudged Melissa as the car pulled up. They'd noticed Terri had left for the morning, but they insisted she had to come back for a special 'surprise' by noon. Under pain of death, they said.
"Oh god he's yummy," Melissa sighed when she caught sight of Eric Singer climbing out of the limousine. Bruce strode out next, carrying his guitar case and bag in hand. Quickly they moved to answer the door when the bell rang.
Both men's eyes widened when the door opened, and they saw who was behind it. Two girls, one generously built with honey blonde hair smiled at Eric, while a tall redhead with curls of soft red hair and blue eyes behind her glasses admired them for a long moment.
"You're Shannon, right?" Bruce asked after a moment's silence.
"That'd be me… and this is Melissa…"
"Hi," Eric smiled warmly at Melissa, who felt as if she was going to faint. Shannon pushed her past herself as she nudged her toward him. Melissa smoothed out her colorful spring green sundress she wore with a pair of platform sandals. Her long hair she wore up in a loose bun, her hazel eyes soft and inviting.
"Nice to meet you…" she breathed, taking his offered hand. Blue eyes fixed into her hazel ones.
"Is Terri here yet?" Bruce asked softly. He looked good enough to eat in those tight jeans and loose dressy sweatshirt, a soft red in color.
"Don't just stand there, come in!" Melissa blurted out, and grabbed Eric by the hand. She took his bag from him and pulled him gently after her.
"Pretty warm reception," Eric winked at Bruce, who was still admiring Shannon. While she wasn't the reason he came, he couldn’t help but admire how attractive she was in the leather pants that laced up the front, and the tight leather top she was wearing. He noticed the small Demon iconic symbol on her necklace, and she beckoned him in with a slender finger. She took his bag and he followed her in.
"So… where is Terri?" Bruce asked. "Is she doing all right?"
"Well she's at the AAAS convention… with a bunch of scientists… but we'll get her here in time… have you been working on your part of the plan?"
"Yeah, I've got the secret weapon here," Bruce grinned. "Now you just gotta keep up your end…"
"Or Gene will," Shannon winked. "Now let's get going…"
"I think Eric and Melissa already are," Bruce laughed when he saw Melissa walking around the house with Eric toward the pool.
***********************************************************
It was nice to simply talk to and enjoy the company of an attractive woman, Eric thought to himself. She wasn't all over him groveling and trying so obviously to get into his pants. Not that he would mind getting a little more intimate with this attractive woman a little later. Yet he liked having the time to just enjoy shooting the breeze and relaxing away from the pressures of performing and judgmental fans.
"I'm still trying to get used to this hair," he laughed when he caught Melissa staring at him.
"I like you as a brunette," Melissa smiled.
"Really? I thought it was kinda dumb at first… and it's a pain in the butt to remove it, so it stayed in while I've been touring with Alice Cooper…"
"It suits you, and you look really deli… I mean handsome with it…" Melissa told him. They were slowly tying balloons to the chairs around the pool, while Shannon and Bruce were busying themselves inside with Gene.
"Hmm, nice to know someone likes it," Eric laughed. "The way some fans reacted, you'd think I told them to all jump in a lake!"
"Well, you needed a job, and I think it was great you could fill in for Peter… but I was a little upset you were in the cat makeup…"
"Well, I know," Eric sighed. "But what other choice was there… sure I could have been a Hawk or Lizard boy… but well… you do what you have to…"
"Hey I don’t mean to be insulting," Melissa suddenly apologized. "I just… well some of us old time fans felt screwed anyway that KISS did a makeup reunion tour…"
"I can see why that was. I mean Bruce and I… that's why we quit. What was the point in us staying in KISS if they were doing the makeup thing? We've moved onto our own projects since then, and I have no regrets…"
"You don't hate Gene and Paul for it do you?" Melissa asked him, struggling with a rather tricky balloon cluster that refused to untangle. Eric helped her by grabbing one strand while she untangled five from the rest of the huge cluster. For a moment, his blue eyes met her hazel ones, and they stopped when their hands touched.
"No. I'll admit I was pissed at first, but all good things come to an end. Heck, isn't that life?"
"Yeah," she nodded.
"Shannon said you were a model. It's nice to see some real looking women in the business for a change…"
"You mean ones that don't look like skinny sticks?" she laughed.
"Yeah, really. You look healthy, and very attractive. It's a lot easier on the eyes…" Eric smiled graciously.
"You flatterer, you," she laughed.
"Hey, you like my hair, so I had to return the compliment. Especially when it comes from such an attractive woman…"
"Hey you two!" Gene called out the sliding door to them. "You two done with the balloons yet? I don't want my pool furniture to float away!"
"Yeah, it's all ready!" Melissa called back.
"Okay, we're getting close to zero hour! You know what to do, right?"
"Yeah! I hope Shannon remembers!"
"She's on her way now to pick up Terri!" Gene called. "They should be here…"
Eric and Melissa exchanged a grin, and took hands to walk back toward the house. Melissa could hardly believe how easily they were already getting along. He seemed genuinely interested in getting to know her. Things couldn't be better right now. In fact, she hoped they would continue to improve.
