"Oh god Paul," Trynia cried.
"Shhhhhhh, sweetie, I'll take care of it," he whispers as he steps toward the group.
"I can't BELIEVE you would DARE show your face around here and disgrace us," Mr. Merin snaps at Chase.
"LEAVE him ALONE!" Michael says to his father.
"Mr. Merin, what is this about?" Paul says angrily. "I want to know what you have against me and your daughter and I want to know now, before any more people are hurt! Do you have issue with who is on our guest list?"
He advanced on Mr. Merin; eyes hard and dark like the darkest stormcloud. His fists clenched, ready to do battle for what was now his. Ralph Merin whirled on Paul, held back only by Mrs. Merin. He gently removed her hands from his shoulders and took at step threateningly toward Paul.
"Care to tell me WHY you couldn't keep your hands off my daughter?" he snaps at Paul.
"Ralph, do NOT do this!" Mrs. Merin said angrily. Paul stopped for a moment and regards the crowd.
"You couldn't wait to shack up and start breaking the rules, because you're' rich, couldn't' you?" Mr. Merin shook his fist under Paul's nose.
"If the question is concerning your daughter and her pregnancy, then yes, she is pregnant and we are very happy about it, as I stated before," said Paul, arms folded across his chest. It was all he could do not to plaster a punch right in Mr. Merin's face.
"Dad, please don't!" Trynia cried.
"It figures, you rock stars think you're above the rules, is it?" Mr. Merin demanded. "And you DARE try to make it all right by buying us off with rich hotel rooms?"
"And I intend to FULLY take care of her and our babies, spiritually, financially, emotionally," Paul glared down at him.
"And throwing some big shindig, and making our daughter LIE about what's really going on? And inviting people like HIM to the wedding?" he points at Chase
"Mr. Merin, with all due respect, I am fifty years old. If Trynia and I want to start a family at this point, I don't see why it's anyone's business in this room. Other than ours," Paul said coldly, leaning down to turn the full force of his legendary dark eyed stare into the enemy that loomed before him.
"You're old enough to be her FATHER!" Mr. Merin poked a finger in Paul's face. He poked Paul's chest with each word for emphasis. "You should DAMN KNOW BETTER!"
Now Paul felt the anger reaching the boiling point. By now, Mike had grabbed his father's arm, tugging him back. Despite his better judgment, Paul could not let the last comment slip without saying, "I'd probably make a damn better father to her than you would!"
"How DARE YOU!" Mr. Merin roared, shaking off Mike's warning hand. He lunged at Paul, his fist raised to strike. Just in the nick of time, Chase grabbed his father's wrist, while Mike grabbed Mr. Merin's other arm.
"No, how dare YOU show up and try to upset your daughter!" Paul shouted back, his one hand forming a fist while the other poked an accusing finger back at Mr. Merin.
"STOP it!" Mike cried, struggling to hold his father back. Steve rushed over, helping his two siblings to restrain their father. It took all three of them to keep him from attacking Paul then and there, struggling against their combined grasps.
"And make sure you get this straight. You are NOT a part of our bedroom decisions and you never will be!" Paul continued, face reddening in in anger. "What we choose to do is between US!"
"If I HAD, she wouldn't be IN this mess!" Mr. Merin snarled. "You son of a BITCH!"
"Mess? MESS? You call carrying two lovely children a MESS? If I wasn't in front of guests I'd suggest we'd step outside and settle this man to man!" Paul glared at him. Mr. Merin snapped something that sounded like a harsh curse in Italian, right in Paul's face. Paul's lip curled in distaste, hands knotted into fists, as his blood boiled hot.
"She obviously can't keep her legs crossed!" Mr. Merin added.
"All right then, let's do it, if you can't calm down and act civilized!" Paul threatened. "I will NOT have you say such things about the woman I LOVE, damn it! I don't care if you are her father or not!"
"Dad I will NOT have you yell at my fiancée like that!" Trynia screamed. She grabbed Paul and held him tightly about the waist.
"You've LOST your mind!" he cried back. "You can't be any daughter of mine to..."
"Ralph, get CONTROL of yourself!" Mrs. Merin yelled. "You are making an idiot of yourself."
"How DARE you!" Trynia cried. "I'm not some stupid child you can order around!"
Paul walked away momentarily in frustration, hands at his sides. Gene shook his head, realizing he had to step in soon, before things got ugly. Paul losing his temper was not a pretty sight.
"Young lady, keep OUT of this!" Mr. Merin poked a finger at her. Paul turned around, returning as he breathed deeply for a last shred of self-control.
"Mr. Merin, if you have a problem, you have it with me. You leave Trynia OUT of this!"
"You just couldn't wait could you?" Ralph asked. "I'm her FATHER! I have a RIGHT to know what's going on in her life!"
"No, I couldn't and why the hell do you think it's any of your damn business how we plan our family?" Paul asked.
"And what kind of a father can you possibly be if you don't understand that simple fact?" Dr. Merin asked, twisting out of Mike and Steve's grasps.
"Daddy, no!" Trynia yells.
"OH damn it," Mike shook his head. "Steve, chase, help me..."
"Is there a problem here?" Gene Simmons asked, suddenly moving between Paul and Ralph. Mike had just grabbed hold of his father again, Chase at his other arm. Strangely this time Steve made no move to help them.
"I LOVE my children...all of them DAMN IT!" Paul roared, shaking his fist. "And I will NEVER subject them to this bullshit that you are putting Trynia through!"
"Easy," Gene said, taking Paul's arm. " You better take a few minutes and cool down. Both of you. You're reasonable men, and you have to see this isn't helping ANYONE... so why don't we just go outside and calm down..."
"You keep OUT of this, you sex fiend," Mr. Merin shouted at Gene. "It's YOUR influence that has caused this mess with my daughter's lifestyle..."
"Now WAIT a minute," Gene snapped. "There's no need for that..."
"RALPH!" Mrs. Merin cried in shock.
"This is between me and him, so BUTT out you poor excuse for a human being!" Mr. Merin slurred at Gene.
"I'm asking you to be reasonable," Gene said, whirling on Mr. Merin. "And I'm not going to even stoop to your level. There is NO need for this bullshit and I won't have it at my best friend's wedding got it?"
"I can't believe you can stand there and do this!" Trynia sobbed at her father.
"This man is MY FRIEND! How DARE you judge him so!"
So saying, she moved over to Gene, and gripped his hand. Gene sighed and looked down to her. Terri opened her mouth to say something, but stopped with a warning glance from Paul.
"Your daughter has far more sense then you seem to," Gene emphasized, getting in Ralph's face. "And I suggest if you can't handle it, leave now."
"Shut up and keep out of this," Ralph pushed Gene aside. Mike and Chase released their father, hoping he would back down and be sensible. Paul turned back to Ralph, nudging Gene aside.
"You have absolutely no f**cking idea what you are talking about. You have NO idea about your daughter's morals and about when we decided to have sex," Paul snapped. "And you have NO right to stand there and accuse ME of somehow corrupting your daughter."
"I don't need to guess that they were compromised." Mr. Merin returned. "With company like this..."
"And you have NOOOOOOOO right to stand there and basically accuse her of being a slut in front of everyone!" Paul finished.
"Do you need to leave now?" Gene asked Ralph. "Or do I have to have you escorted OUT of here? For making an ASS of yourself, Sir?"
Paul ran his hands through his hair, furiously pacing back and forth. Ralph ignored Gene, and screamed, "I am a DAMN good father!"
"Prove it!" Paul glared at him, eyes on fire.
"Dad, stop it!" Trynia shouted.
"I WILL!" Mr. Merin snarled, grabbing Paul and raising his fist. Thankfully, Mrs. Merin reached him first.
"I will make these the two happiest babies in the world!" Paul exclaimed.
"Dad, this is enough," Mike said.
"Stay out of this!" Dr. Merin gritted.
"Dear, you've MORE then enough made your point," Mrs. Merin huffed. "I will not stand here and let you make a bigger fool of yourself..."
"If you can't act civilly, I'm going to have you escorted out of here. Whether I do it, or Steve and Andre do it, it's up to you," Gene growled, grabbing MR. Merin's sleeve. "So I suggest you listen to your lovely wife... And that goes for everyone. Anyone who can't handle WHAT is going on here is FREE to leave NOW."
"I've never had ANY intention of not taking care of what's mine!" Paul continues to howl.
"Stay OUT of this!" Ralph yelled at Gene. "This is between me and HIM!"
"You tell ME why I am incapable of being a good father to your daughter's babies. You tell ME!" Paul screamed at this point.
"Dad that is ENOUGH!" Mike yelled at his father, still firmly holding his arm. "You are DRUNK!"
"STAY out of this!" he snapped at Mike. Chase needed no prompting to assist his brother in holding their father yet again. He nodded at Mrs. Merin who sighed and motioned toward the door. They began to drag their father out bodily, fighting all the way.
"STEVE HELP! I can't hold him!" Mike called.
"I'll give you some help," Kevin offered, moving over to assist them. Gratefully Mike gave a nod of thanks. Andre and Chris had already sprung out of the crowd to assist them, summoned at Gene's prompting. They still kept back as Mike and Chase continued to wrestle with their father. Kevin was shaken off, his hair disheveled.
"Those babies will want for NOTHING! F***cking NOTHING!" Paul continued to yell.
"C'mon Dad, you are drunk and you aren't in your right mind!" Mike said firmly. "Make it easy and stop being a fool! Steve, talk to him... get him to see reason!"
"I agree with him," Steve said quietly. Paul whirled around, furious.
"I will NOT let you ruin my sister's wedding," he says angrily.
"Paul, easy," Gene said, grabbing Paul and holding him back. Ralph snarled and pulled against his sons. Erica sobbed bitterly at this point. Kevin went over to her and held her. Still Chris and Andre looked helplessly at Gene, waiting for the order to step in.
"Steve, why?" Trynia cried. "Are you against me too?"
"I agree with dad," Steve said, tracing his foot over the polished wood floor.
"AT least he has some SENSE!" Ralph shouted. "Which is more then I can say for you!"
Paul turned in desperation and noticed her crying. He whirled around, moving toward Dr. Merin. Gene snapped his fingers, signaling Andre and Chris to take over. Angrily Paul shouted, "Then get the hell OUT! I will not let you upset her!"
"You think because you have MONEY that makes it all right?" Ralph slurs at Paul.
"Dad enough," says Trynia. "If you can't behave, get out now!"
"Dad, stop it now," Mike urged.
"That's it," Gene snapped. "Andre, Chris, get him OUT of here..."
"You can't DO this to me!" Mr. Merin yelled.
"Your daughter and our babies will have everything they ever need.... And want!" Paul yelled. "And it has nothing to do with money."
Chris and Andre each took an arm and bodily restrained MR. Merin. "Right this way sir... leave him to us," Andre said to Mike and Chas.
"Thank you," Michael sighed.
"I'm very sorry about this," Mrs. Merin looked at them both.
"It's all right," said Chris. "We're professionals..."
"Let me go," Mr. Merin snapped.
"Then stop acting like an idiot," Mrs. Merin yelled at him.
"Let me go damn you, I'll knock it off," Mr. Merin snarled. Andre and Chris still kept a hold on him.
"Dad, if you can't understand, then please leave now," Trynia has tears in her eyes.
Mr. Eisen entered the room. They have been out in the garden patio. A hurt look came into her father's eyes. "Trynia..."
"Don't say anything else Dad, you've said MORE then enough..." Trynia shook her head. Gene and Terri restrained still Paul. Bill Eisen walked immediately to Tryn who was crying. Confused, he put his arm around Trynia and looked at her dad, who was obviously drunk.
"I just don't understand WHY you didn't TELL us, why you did this to me and your mother, after all we've done!" Ralph appealed to her.
"Ralph, whatever this is about, let these two have their night," Mr. Eisen said quietly.
"This man is your son, you ask him," Ralph snapped at him. "How he's turned my child against me."
"This is supposed to be about two people in love, starting a new life. What right do we have to mess with that?" Mr. Eisen looked at Paul.
"Dad, Trynia's going to have a baby." Paul said quietly.
"And I suppose YOU have all the answers, considering this is your child?" he asked Mr. Eisen. Mr. Eisen looked a bit stunned, then recovered.
"Congratulations are in order, then" he smiled and hugged Trynia. "And as far as Paul being my child, it's his decision...their decision..."
"You must know I love Trynia... and to se her like this... breaks my heart," Mr. Merin began to cry.
"That makes it all right then?" Mr. Merin asked.
"I suppose it does."
"Then, I have nothing more to say to you, Trynia. You've made your choice, now LIVE with it..." MR. Merin said coldly. Glancing up at Chris and Andre he said, "Let me go. I'm leaving now."
"Whatever, just don't think you can..." Andre said, but stopped with snap of the fingers from Paul.
"My daughter is dead to me now," Mr. Merin said sadly, turning his back to Trynia and the assembled crowd.
"You're going to regret this," Paul glared at him. Dr. Merin didn't even look back as he stumbled out of the hall.
"Let's go. There's nothing more for us to do here..." Ralph said to his wife. Crying bitterly, she put her arm around her husband to help him.
"Then you sir, are an idiot," Paul said coldly as they exited.
As Mrs. Merin glanced back, she mouthed to Trynia, "I love you, baby. I'll see you tomorrow."
In the aftermath, Trynia continued to wipe her eyes, sobbing. Mike stood in shock, and moved over to stand by her. Carolyn stood on Trynia's other side, each resting their hands on her shoulders.
"Stan..." Mr. Eisen started.
"Dad, I really need to get Tryn calmed down right now," Paul said, holding up a hand. Walking over to Trynia he nudged Carolyn and Mike aside, and hugged her tightly to him.
"It's okay," he whispered to them. Mike turned away for a moment and regarded Steve.
"How COULD you side with DAD?" Mike demanded of him.
"Hey, it's not my mistake," Steve answered. "I have my reasons..."
"You jerk," Carolyn began.
Paul turned to her family, saying as his eyes teared up slightly, "If any of you are looking for someone to blame, blame me. It was my idea. I couldn't wait to start a family with this beautiful lady."
"I understand man," Mike said. Chase also nodded.
"But let's not forget that she is PREGNANT. I do not want her stressing over this crap. I do not want my babies harmed," Paul added, still hugging Trynia close in his arms.
"Steve," Trynia turned to him.
"Trynia, I'm not against you. I love you. You have to know that." Steve said.
"If you are against me, then leave now," said Trynia. "I don't want to upset my children or my husband to be any longer."
"It's just that he's older, he's not Catholic, he's got a broken marriage already, he.... I don't know.... For all we know, he's on drugs."
"Steve, you are WRONG!" Trynia snapped. "If you can't keep a civil work in your mouth, then leave now!"
"I just think you've made a mistake, that's all," said Steve, thrusting his hands into his pockets. He glanced at Amy for support.
Amy snorted, "Shut up you stupid idiot. Paul's a good guy. He's loaded, filthy rich, and he LOVES your sister. She's the luckiest girl in the world."
"I just hate to see you being the token rock wife on the road, surrounded by groupies and a cheating husband," Steve snapped back.
"Steve, shut up," Amy rolled. "You're sounding like a real asshole now. Don't embarrass us!"
"I'm not going to be unfaithful to your sister. That I can promise you. Yes, I'm older.... And not Catholic. That I can't change," Paul said, eyeing Steve. He had calmed somewhat from before. "But I can hardly believe that your sister will ever forgive you for standing up against her on the eve of her wedding."
"Steve," Mike said.
Steve looked down at the ground. "No, I suppose not."
"Maybe we should leave," Amy suggested. "Since you made an ass of yourself, dear."
"I pray to God that I am wrong, Trynia, but I still agree with dad," said Steve. He looked at Amy and nodded sadly.
"Tryn, for what it's worth I am sorry," Amy turned to Trynia.
Steve walked over to Trynia to give her a kiss on the cheek. She shut her eyes, flinching at his touch. Softly she said, "Please just leave now."
"I wish you all the luck in the world, Sis," he whispered as he wiped his face.
Amy yanked him away. He turned his back to the crowd and walked away. For a minute Amy remained, wringing her hands.
"I'm sorry Mr. Stanley," she said to Paul. He turned around to anxiously look at Trynia once more. "Best of luck to you both."
"Thanks," Paul said, and leaned down to kiss Amy on the cheek. She backed away apologetically, retaining as much dignity as she could muster before following her husband.
"Love, are you OK?" Paul asked Trynia, moving up behind her to embrace her.
"No," she sighed. "I wish... oh god, I wish they had understood."
Taking her in his arms, he hugged her tightly to him. She hugged him back, sobbing. "Trynia, this can't be good for you" Mr. Eisen said quietly to her.
Gene shook his head and turned to Paul. Just then, Mrs. Eisen walked in also and saw the crowd. Confused, she moved over to her husband with a face filled with questions. Taking her hand he patted it, and whispered softly to her.
Noticing her, Erica sobs harder, "Grandma!" and ran to her.
"I think maybe you two should go home and calm down," Gene suggested to Trynia and Paul. Backing away, Paul still held Trynia's hands in his.
"What do you want honey?" he asked her.
"Let's just go home," she whispered.
Nodding, he turned to everyone, and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I think it's best if we call it a night..."
Soberly everyone started to move to say goodbye to Paul and Trynia. One by one, they whispered their thanks and congratulations to the couple. While they strode past Paul said, "The wedding will be on for ten am tomorrow... Thank you...every one...for coming tonight and for your support."
Gene clapped his hands, urging everyone to do the same. "Anyone who is against this please leave now. Because my best friend is getting, married and we won't stand for any more interruptions. Because these two people DESERVE each other.
And the HELL with anyone who thinks otherwise."
"Speech!" Mike shouted. Paul smiled gratefully at his future brother in law and turned to Gene.
"Gene, if I could just say..."
"It's your show buddy," Gene nodded.
"Hey, people, look, don't leave yet..." Paul said loudly. Guests stopped in their tracks at the sounds of his voice as he continued, "I'm not usually a man at a loss of words. It's sort of my bread and butter..."
Gene stayed silent, waiting to hear the rest. "But ever since I met this woman, I knew that we were meant for each other, and we are VERY excited about this next step."
"Here here!" Mike clapped.
"And as much as we've been looking forward to seeing all of you, we've also been dreading it too because we knew it was very likely you would find out."
Trynia bit her lip and looked at Mrs. Eisen nervously. "And that there would be those who wouldn't approve. Those who would think badly of me and of Trynia."
Carolyn wiped her eyes and went to stand near Trynia. So did Mike, his wife, and Chas.
"And who would think that somehow it was an accident, as if two beautiful starbabies were something that should never have happened," Paul continued.
"I've thought to myself many times, should I have done this differently, and maybe I should have, but damn it, we did what we felt was right and we STILL feel is right."
Trynia squeezed Paul's hand. "I know that this is right," she said loudly.
"I love this man with all I have, and I love our children. I wanted this family as much as he does."
"I can tell you that I love her more than life, and these babies are a part of her," Paul nodded, fingering her chin before everyone. "The cold hard fact is, I won't be around long enough to see Trynia into old age. I know that. She knows that. Most likely, it's going to be these two babies holding her hand on her deathbed. And for that, I bless them, and thank them."
"AMEN," Mike said loudly. "And we'll be here, when that happens."
Proudly he rested his hand on Paul's shoulder, flanked by Carolyn and Chase. Paul cast them grateful smiles, and chuckled, "For those who support us, we THANK you. For those who can't, we have to do what's right for us."
Then, Paul clapped Mike on the back, "I appreciate that, and I know your sister does too."
"And I'm right next to him," says Carolyn. "With all my heart."
"And me," added Chase. "This man accepted me for who I am. I can do no less for him."
Paul laughed a bit to break the tension, "And I think for the first time, my mother is absolutely speechless."
Leaving Trynia in the care of her siblings, he moved over to hug a very shocked Mrs. Eisen. With wide eyes and mouth, she regarded her son, standing a bit apart from her own husband. He hugged her tightly. Leaning down he hugged Erica too, who was still crying. Kevin stood nearby, a bit awkward and at a loss for words.
"Congratulations, Uncle Paul!" Erica said through the tears. Trynia turned to Paul's parents, tears in her eyes.
"I don't see what the big deal is. It's a BABY for heaven's sake," Mrs. Eisen shrugged and smiled.
Paul's dad leaned down and hugged her tightly. "Two more grandchildren" he chuckles softly.
"Two?" Mrs. Eisen raised her eyebrows.
"Mrs. and Mr. Eisen," Trynia stammered. "I'm sorry my father was such a jerk... He's never been one for being... well..."
"Uncle Paul, I thought he was going to fight you" Erica sobbed.
"Chase and Mike wouldn't let him," Trynia said.
"Hey...Erica.... It's going to be FINE, Hon," he tried to calm her. "He was drunk. Everything's over. Mr. Merin will wake up tomorrow hung over, and we'll take it from there "
Trynia sighed and looked away in shame, "And unfortunately when people drink, it's ugly... And I am ashamed to admit my father is an alcoholic..."
Mr. Eisen looked at Paul and they exchange a sad glance. "And when people are alcoholics, they tend to have people cover for them," he muttered.
Paul rubbed Trynia's back quietly. "IT makes sense..." she whispered. "All these years..."
Mr. Eisen said, "I'm just sorry that he had to choose today of all days to have a break down."
"I know," Trynia wiped her eyes.
"His beautiful daughter doesn't deserve this," Mr. Eisen further added.
"NO, she doesn't," Paul said, firmly.
"He went on a drinking binge when Carolyn told him she was pregnant... and he almost threw her out of the house... had she not already decided to move out..." Trynia stammered. She was already at college... and she was living with her boyfriend... and then when they married he almost didn't come to the wedding..."
"Love, he has nowhere to throw, nothing he can do to you. I'll take care of you. If he chooses not to be involved..." Paul stopped and sighed.
"But then he showed up... and all of a sudden things were forgiven when his grandchild was baptized. But that doesn't excuse the way he acts," Carolyn added bitterly.
"And that will probably happen HERE," Paul said.
"Don't worry about him," Gene said, moving over to Trynia. "It's his loss..."
"Gene that doesn't help," she sighed.
"Are they boys or girls?" Erica asked, trying to interject some happiness into the somber mood.
"We don't know yet," Trynia said shyly. "But it's fraternal twins."
"It might not help, but it's the TRUTH, Trynia. If that man can't be happy over the birth of his grandchildren, you don't NEED him!" Terri snapped, finally breaking her silence.
"If only it were that easy," Trynia said to her. "We're very close, my family... but there is a lot of hurt..."
"So much for separate beds, Uncle Paul," Erica teased quietly, trying to get Trynia to smile.
Paul grinned at her and made a face. Then he turned to Trynia, praying that she is settling down. She breathed deeply and tried to smile.
"You don't understand, girly, that separate bed rule was for YOU," Paul teased back, keeping an eye on Trynia, who managed a small smile.
He pulls her close and kisses her.
She turns to Mr. and Mrs. Eisen, and is silent for a moment.
"Paul and I wanted to start a family before too much more time went by..."
"Sweetheart, please don't worry about us. We are thrilled. A little surprised, but thrilled," said Mrs. Eisen.
"I'm relieved and glad," Trynia said, wiping away a tear.
"We've loved having Aaron around and I'm sure these two will be no different. They are always welcome in New York," Mr. Eisen nodded.
"Paul, I just don't understand," Mrs. Eisen asked. Trynia looked at her, wiping away a tear.
"What's that, mom?" Paul said slowly as he winked to Trynia.
"It was this way with Linda too. I KNOW I taught you about birth control" she began. "And perhaps it would have been better if just once you could have waited until after the wedding. That's all."
He leaned over and hugged her. "Trynia and I are well aware of birth control, mom. Sometimes God gives you babies whenever he wants, regardless of everyone's agenda."
"I know that, sweetheart. You're a good boy." she sniffed. "Trynia..." Mrs. Eisen turned to her at her.
"Yes..." she asked, heart pounding almost in her mouth.
"You are taking care of yourself, right? Vitamins, lots of milk, all the right foods?"
She laughed and wiped away a tear, "Yes... Paul is making sure of that."
"Because I'm not sure if Paul told you, but Eisen babies are big," Mrs. Eisen blushed. "I was in labor with Stanley for almost 20 hours."
She groaned, "Oh good lord..."
"Julia was worse. Both were over 9 pounds. It was sheer hell. I'm just telling you," she said as she waved her hand. "And that horrible Linda was SO worried about not gaining weight with Aaron. As if a pregnant woman shouldn't gain weight. Good GRIEF."
"I guess I have nothing to worry about," Trynia laughed. "I've gained almost twenty five pounds."
"Stanley never slept. He wouldn't take his bottle and he cried all the time." she said as Paul rolled his eyes and smiled. "And at the bris, when he was circumcised...."
"Mom, for GOD's sake!" Paul interrupted. Erica chuckled.
Mr. Eisen chuckled too, "I know what you're going to say, Eve, but give the poor girl a break."
Gene quietly looked on, saying goodbye to people who were starting to leave. Paul smiled and shook the hands of his guests, never keeping far from Trynia, as he is still very worried about her. In the midst of exit greetings Trynia apologized to Gene, "I'm really sorry about my dad's outburst."
Terri came up alongside them and hugged Gene from behind, "I still can not believe he had the nerve to come here and say that, alcoholic or not."
He turned to Tryn and said, "Hey, it's all right. I feel worse for you having to put up with his crap so many years."
"Yeah, unfortunately my mom's been covering for him for so long..." Trynia groaned. "It was something you just didn't talk about... And he's a doctor for crying out loud.
"How's he going to feel when these babies come?" Terri said quietly.
"I don't know," Trynia shook her head. "When Carolyn finally had her babies, my father came around at the baptism. I guess the fact she was having little catholic babies made up for her sins..."
"Oh man," Gene turned up his nose in disgust. "One of those huh?"
"Must at least make you feel good to know that he's behind you," said Terri sarcastically.
"And maybe part of it is he knows that when these babies are born, they'll be worth more money than he'll make in a lifetime," Gene muttered.
"By far," Terri agreed.
"Sounds like he's the one with the problem, not you," Gene said to Trynia, taking her hand and squeezing it.
"Paul, with all of his faults, loves the hell out of you, you know that, don't you?" Terri nodded to them both.
"I know." she said with a laugh.
"Besides, once they are born, they'll have Jacob to keep them occupied," said Terri.
"And TONS of babysitters," Gene added.
Trynia giggled, "Oh brother!"
"It IS a little funny," Terri smiled. "I remember you telling me about how hard Paul was on Erica. And see how it turned out." she smiles and points to Trynia's stomach.
"Yes, but he was NOTHING compared to this," Trynia sighed.
"No, because Paul does it out of love. Your father, that was hate speaking tonight," said Terri.
"Unfortunately," Trynia confirmed.
"Obviously he's got a lot of issues," Gene snorted. "Sounds to me like he was more embarrassed about your choice in guests, and the fact he wasn't in control o the wedding situation. Apparently, he prefers his children marry cookie-cutter images of himself, at a ripe old age of course, and wait to procreate until he gives his blessing. The Pregnancy was just the straw that broke the camel's back."
Paul walked back over to them and put his arm around Trynia. "You getting tired, baby?" he murmured.
"I think I'll need to go home soon," she sighed. He rubbed her arm reassuringly.
"I think that's a good idea. I'll have Christine make you some warm tea and you can stretch out in bed and watch some TV," Paul agreed, stroking her back.
"I think we've determined her old man wasn't just miffed about the kids," Gene said to Paul. "I think it was a LOT more going on... especially if he's an alcoholic..."
"No, he's not," Paul said quietly, "I think a lot of it has to do with me. AND with the alcohol."
"Yeah," Gene muttered. "I don't get it though... Why that oldest brother just stood by and let him act like an ass... when her other two brothers stepped in like the three musketeers..."
"Good question, other than possibly he's not nuts about me either." Paul whispered to Gene.
"I would HATE to piss Carol off... that sister of hers is a BITCH when she's mad," Gene joked.
"Gene, I just feel like crap about this tonight," Paul whispered. "This whole thing.... Starting a family early.... It was basically my master plan."
"And poor Trynia is catching hell because of it?" Gene asked.
"Yeah," Paul shook his head.
"That Amy chick he's married to, she has her head screwed on a bit weird. I think she's more attracted to the dollar signs," said Gene with a wry smile.
"All she can see is what an idiot Steve is being and how it's making their chances of getting their hands on more money and prestige is getting blown." Paul muttered.
"Paul, don't do a hatchet job on yourself now," Gene sighed.
"I just hope she's happy with what we decided. REALLY happy," Paul murmured. "And I hope this incident with daddy dearest is a blip in the road."
"I think she is." Gene added. "He's just embarrassed he lost his control over another kid."
"Not only that, he lost control to ME," said Paul firmly.
"Most dads go through this. And I'm sure I'll be a pain in the ass when Sophie and Nick decide to move out and start their own families, and have their own kids..." Gene joked. "But I gotta admit that was EXTREME. To just fly off the handle over a 28 year old child of his. I mean Terri's mom was a bitch when she admitted that we were an item, but they didn't flip out like that. And her FATHER was the one who convinced Terri to move back and join me in LA again."
"Gene, you're a hell of a dad. You'll be fair. That's all a prospective son-in-law can ask."
"Thanks man."
"I REALLY appreciate Terri spending the night at our house tonight and letting me stay in your guest house. I know that she does NOT need to be alone on the night before her wedding. Not after all this crap," said Paul.
While the guys conferred, Terri escorted Trynia to sit at her seat once more, fetching her a glass of water. Carolyn wandered over, sitting next to the two friends. She asked, "How are you holding up?"
"She's okay," Terri said. "Look, you are one hell of a sister sticking up for her like that..."
"We have to stick together," Carolyn nodded, and hugged Trynia. "Don't we..."
"Thank you," Trynia whispered, kissing Carolyn's cheek.
"Say, do you want me to stick around Sis, and spend the night with you?" she asked. "I would feel better if you weren't alone..."
"Terri will be with me," Trynia said. "But I'd love the company."
"Join us," Terri smiled. "But I have to warn you, we have a 7:00 a.m. wake up call. Maria's coming over at 8:00 to do Trynia's hair and makeup and mine too."
"Well the bridesmaids can dress in my house," said Trynia. "If they feel up to it..."
"That might work better," Carolyn agreed.
"I mean, Sharmane and Rochelle suggested we could all come over early with donuts and bagels and get ready together," said Trynia with a chuckle.
"All us girls."
"That would be fun!" Terri agreed. "And we can help you get in your dress..."
"And we can drool over you, and help each other with our hair," Carolyn laughed.
"And joke about what is borrowed and blue and something old and new..."
"And we'll be able to help you with your dress and slip, make sure the bustle works properly," Terri added.
"I can't wait to see Trynia come down the aisle," Paul smiled as he walked over to the ladies clustered around Trynia. She laughed and blushed.
"Because this will ALL be worth it," he added, kissing her softly.
"And us guys can bitch about tuxedos," Gene grinned.
"I STILL can't believe she's wearing a mini dress." Terri teased Paul. "And how to tie the damn bow ties and pin our boutonnieres on."
"She is NOT!" he laughed. "She's wearing a princess dress and that's final."
"WHAT?" Gene asked. "NOW I'm interested."
"Oh yes," Terri laughed and winked at Trynia, "Plenty of T and A, right, honey?"
"Terri!" Trynia gasped. "Perish the thought!"
"My wife will NOT be showing T and A at our wedding!" Paul laughed loudly, "Now later that night, that's different...."
"Remember what I said though, lover. The bridesmaid dresses DO have some cleavage" Terri bit Gene's ear playfully. Gene laughed and rubbed her backside.
"And the tuxedo pants are very TIGHT fits on some of the ushers," he whispered to her seductively. She grinned at him and pinched his butt.
"That ALONE will make it worth it," she purred.
"We did rent them from the same place..." Gene continued, draping his arm over her shoulders. "Those matching white tuxes with the tight pants and the form fitting jackets... You can see EVERY curve on some of them."
Paul looked shyly at Tryn, hoping to see that she has relaxed a bit. He was still very worried. She held Carolyn's hand, a bit calmer. Carolyn's glance of protectiveness told him all he needed to know.
"Well, he'll either show tomorrow or he won't," Paul said.
"And if he doesn't, his loss," Carolyn said firmly. "But I think Mom will be there, don't you?"
"Dad or no dad..." Paul muttered.
"But who will give me away?" Trynia asked.
"My dad, maybe?" Paul scratched his head, perplexed.
"I could give her away," Mike suggested, joining them. Paul smiled at him, relieved.
"I think that's a great idea. You've earned it tonight."
"Thanks man," he laughed, clapping Paul's back. "She is my little sister after all,"
"I absolutely love you Michael," she said, kissing his cheek.
"Hey, what can I say?" Paul laughed. "As the old joke goes, I don't care who gives her away, as long as I'm there to catch her. I know she'll look gorgeous."
"Unless Chase wants that honor," Trynia turned to him.
"Your call, baby," said Paul.
"No, it's okay," Chase interrupted. "Just having me in the wedding party is enough. Hell just seeing this day..."
"If you don't mind..." she turned to Chas.
"No it's cool. I think Mike's a better choice since I'm your little brother," he joked.
"I wish it was tomorrow at this time," Paul sighed. "It would all be over and we'd be partying on the dance floor."
"It will be here sooner then you think," Gene reminded him. "And life can get back to normal."
"Trynia is going to take Eisen for her last name," Paul smiled proudly. "And so will the babies."
Mike laughed, "Not Stanley?"
"We both agreed it was better this way. A little more private, if you know what I mean," Trynia nodded.
"Unless she's changed her mind?" asked Paul.
"Ah I get it," nodded Mike.
"No, I want Eisen," she said firmly. "I want the name to continue."
"I think it's sweet" smiled Terri.
"But DON'T ever ask me to be Terri Witz-Klein-Simmons" she looked at Gene and laughed.
"Well you could simply be Terri Mason Simmons," he suggested. "After all that's little J's last name."
She smiled and blushed a bit, at Gene's mention of marriage. Blowing him a kiss, she winked. Shifting his weight from one foot to another, Gene looked a bit uncomfortable, but smiled as best he can. Paul looked at the two of them and laughed.
"Well, I'd better get this man home before he starts sweating at all this marriage talk," Gene said.
"The world is coming to an end," Trynia joked. "And let us GIRLS make our plans..."
Paul hugged Terri and whispered, "Thank you" in her ear. HE stopped to shake hands with her brothers and sisters, reminding them to charge the hotel rooms to his account. They laughed, giving him a goodbye and thumbs up. Paul clapped Terri on the back one last time and goes to say goodbye to his parents and Erica. When he finished, he met Trynia at the door. Gene leaned down and kisses Tryn on the cheek. He hugged her tightly
"I have never loved anyone like you," Paul whispered to Trynia.
"I know," she whispered. "And what you said to my dad... proves it."
"No matter what happens with your family, I will ALWAYS be with you," Paul added.
"I love you so much," she whispered.
"I love you too" he mouthed. "Until tomorrow?"
"Until tomorrow," she whispered.
"Night, beautiful," he whispered as he kissed her fingers. He places her hand down by her side and winked. Before he turned to leave, he placed his hand lightly on her stomach and patted it. She took his hand and rubbed it over her stomach and smiled.
"Till tomorrow."
"Mmmm," he hummed.
"C'mon loverboy," Gene urged him. He turns to Terri and gathered her up for a kiss good bye.
Paul laughed and waved, as Gene pulled him along. He did not break eye contact from Trynia until he is out the door.
Trynia turned to Terri and sighs, "Some memorable rehearsal dinner, huh?"
"God, if that isn't the truth," Terri agreed, putting her arm around Trynia.
"The beauty of it though is you only have one more day to live through. Then he's permanently yours and you can just sit back and enjoy."
"Yes," she nodded.
"And besides, what can your dad say then? You'll be MARRIED."
"Exactly. He'll bitch though if I have a son and decide to have a bris instead of a baptism," she joked. "Besides, what can he do that would make it worse then it is? He can't hurt me anymore then he has."
"I really hate to say this, but if he DOESN'T show, would that really be so bad?" asked Terri. "It might be just as well."
"I mean, he won't be there to get drunk and embarrass me further," Trynia reflected gloomily.
"That's what I was thinking. I think Mike seems thrilled to death to do the honors tomorrow," Terri said. "At some point, he's going to come groveling back. Let's face it. He's going to want to know his grandbabies, Jewish or not."
"Yes, he is. And if he is a pain, he can't stop my mom from seeing them," Trynia added.
